PRESS RELEASE:

“AN EYE FOR AN EYE” Photo Exhibit by Kristin Andersson Debuts at The Maidstone Hotel

Widely known in Sweden, Andersson brings her visionary work to North America

[NEW YORK, NY, JULY 2022]: Photographer Kristin Andersson will display a resident collection of 16 photography pieces at the Maidstone Hotel in East Hampton, New York, beginning July 13th and running through May of next year. This is Andersson’s very first time showing in North America.

Spearheaded by Swedish hotelier Jenny Baker and filmmaker husband Jonathan Baker, the Maidstone Hotel has been a staple boutique hotel since the 1920s. The hotel’s aesthetic is inspired by Scandinavian luminary, an eclectic mix of the best of Scandinavian design from the 17th century to today’s newest generation of designers, and is a natural fit for Swedish-born Andersson to display her work.

Bringing both forensic work and archaeology into her pictures, “AN EYE FOR AN EYE” highlights raw, vulnerable captures of humans and animals, with an undertone of sensualness. The genre is fashion, portrait and nature, all in one, and each of Andersson’s images tell a story. “Selfportrait”, her principle piece, showcases a beautiful dark horse, hair rustled over its face, deeply making eye contact with the viewer’s soul.

“My fascination for minuteness is always present…a love for excavations: I want to repeat that detail in my pictures. Like an archaeologist who uncovers an ancient artifact with the brush,” says Kristin Andersson

Andersson’s pieces will be displayed around the Maidstone Hotel’s bar, sunroom, and restaurant known as “The Living Room”, and all will be available for purchase in 4 different sizes: 30x40cm, 40x60cm, 70x100cm, 100x140cm, and ranges from $650 to $2,845. All photos are limited edition, pigment print fine art, certified original, and signed.

A year-round destination, the property is THE ONLY design boutique hotel in East Hampton.

ABOUT KRISTIN ANDERSSON

Kristin Andersson (b. 1960) is a Swedish photographer that made a name for herself for being at the same time documentary and realistic while keeping an eye for the particulate and divergent. She brings both forensic work and archaeology into her pictures. “My fascination for minuteness is always present”, she has said, “a love for excavations: I want to repeat that detail in my pictures. Like an archaeologist that uncovers an ancient artifact with the brush”. Her own battle also comes from this obsession with detail. For many years Mrs. Andersson worked as a crime scene forensic photographer for the Stockholm police. Those were dark years, she recalls. Horrid motifs, evil. She had to get out to survive. But the fascination with the unusual is there whatever the genre: fashion, portrait, nature, often an enhanced form of photojournalism. In one of her pictures a murder takes place in the setting of a beautiful garden, victim, and culprit both perfect people. Like the serpent in Paradise. She prefers to work with Leica, Kodak Tri-X and traditional photo paper.
